What is aloe vera?
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) is a succulent plant. The clear gel inside its leaves is mostly water, with natural sugars (polysaccharides), vitamins and minerals. It has been used in skin care for centuries and is one of the most familiar ingredients in soothing lotions and gels.
Why we use it
Aloe vera gives formulas a cool, soothing feel and helps keep skin comfortable and hydrated. In eyelid wipes it softens the cleansing step, so wiping the lash line feels gentle. You will also find it in some of our nose care and pet care products for the same reason: it helps the product feel mild on delicate areas.
Is aloe vera right for everyone?
Aloe vera is well tolerated by most people. In rare cases it can cause sensitivity, especially in people who react to plants in the lily family. If you have reacted to aloe before, check the ingredient list before buying. When trying a new product, a quick patch test on the inner arm is a simple way to check how your skin responds.
How it works with other ingredients
Aloe vera is often combined with hyaluronic acid, chamomile or green tea in our formulas. Together they help balance cleansing ingredients such as tea tree oil, so the product cleans well while still feeling gentle.
