There are two main types of eye doctors in the United States. Knowing the difference helps you book the right appointment.
Optometrist (OD)
Optometrists provide routine eye exams, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and diagnose and manage many common eye conditions, such as dry eye and eyelid inflammation. For most everyday concerns, an optometrist is a good place to start.
Ophthalmologist (MD or DO)
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye care. They diagnose and treat all eye conditions and perform eye surgery, such as cataract surgery. Your optometrist may refer you to an ophthalmologist when specialist care is needed.
When to get urgent care
Seek care right away, at an eye clinic or emergency room, if you have sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a chemical splash in the eye, an eye injury, or a sudden increase in floaters or flashes of light.
Tips for your appointment
Bring your glasses or contact lenses, a list of the medicines and eye products you use, and your insurance card. Write down your symptoms and when they started. Call ahead to confirm that the clinic accepts your insurance and offers the service you need.
