What is green tea extract?

Green tea extract comes from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the same plant used to make green, black and oolong tea. Green tea leaves are not fermented, so they keep a high level of natural polyphenols called catechins. The best known of these is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).

Why it is used in skin care

Catechins are antioxidants. In skin care, antioxidants help protect a formula and the skin’s surface from everyday stress such as pollution and sunlight. Green tea extract also has a fresh, calming feel, which makes it a popular partner for cleansing ingredients in eyelid wipes and cleansers.

Gentle and familiar

Green tea extract is generally well tolerated. It is often combined with aloe vera and chamomile so a product feels soothing while it cleans. As with any new product, follow the label directions and stop use if irritation develops.

Daily routine tip

Antioxidant ingredients work best with a steady routine. Cleansing your lids and lashes once or twice a day, removing all eye makeup before bed, and washing your hands before touching your eyes are simple habits that support healthy-looking lids.
