Hypochlorous Acid

Ingredient Spotlight

A gentle, naturally-occurring cleanser.

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a mild antimicrobial compound your own white blood cells produce naturally. NOVEHA uses it in eyelid sprays and cleansers because it rinses away debris and buildup without the sting of harsher solutions.

What is hypochlorous acid?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a weak acid made from chlorine, oxygen and hydrogen. Your body makes it too: white blood cells called neutrophils produce small amounts as part of the immune response. In personal care, it is used at very low concentrations in water-based solutions, which is why HOCl sprays feel much like water on the skin.

Why it is used for eyelid hygiene

Many eye care professionals suggest hypochlorous acid sprays as part of a daily eyelid hygiene routine. The solution helps rinse away oil, flakes, makeup residue and everyday debris that build up along the lash line. Because it is alcohol-free and usually does not need rinsing, it fits easily into a morning or evening routine.

How to use an eyelid spray

Close your eyes and spray onto the closed lids and lashes from about 6 inches away, or spray onto a clean cotton pad first. Then gently wipe from the inner corner outward. Let it air dry. Use a fresh pad for each eye. Always follow the directions on the product label.

Storage tips

Hypochlorous acid breaks down with heat and light. Keep the bottle closed, store it at room temperature away from direct sunlight, and use it before the expiry date printed on the pack.

Good to know

Well-tolerated, non-irritating by design

Hypochlorous acid formulas are typically alcohol-free and don’t require rinsing. If you have an active eye infection or a diagnosed condition like blepharitis, check with an eye care professional before starting a new routine.
