How to clean your eyelids
A calm, step-by-step approach to daily lid hygiene.
Cleaning your eyelids doesn’t need to be complicated. A calm, consistent routine is more effective than an occasional deep clean.
A simple step-by-step approach
- Wash and dry your hands before touching the eye area.
- Close your eyes and use a fresh eyelid wipe, or a cotton pad with a gentle eyelid cleanser.
- Wipe gently along the lash line, from the inner corner outward, covering both the upper and lower lid margin.
- Use a separate wipe or pad for each eye to avoid transferring debris or bacteria between them.
- Let it air dry for a few seconds before applying makeup, contact lenses, or other products.
How often to do it
Once or twice a day is typical for general hygiene—commonly in the morning and evening, or as part of removing makeup at night. If you’ve been given a specific routine by an eye care professional for a diagnosed condition, follow their guidance over general habits.
A few things to avoid
- Rubbing or scrubbing—gentle pressure is enough.
- Using regular soap, shampoo, or face wash near the eyes; these aren’t formulated for the sensitive eyelid margin.
- Reusing a wipe or pad on the other eye.
